Background of the Study
Resilience refers to an individual's ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity, and it is a critical factor in determining mental health outcomes among adolescents. In low-income communities in Oyo State, adolescents are exposed to numerous stressors such as poverty, violence, and limited educational opportunities. These challenges necessitate the development of effective coping strategies and resilience to mitigate adverse mental health outcomes (Adeniyi, 2023; Okonkwo, 2024). Research indicates that resilient adolescents are better equipped to handle stress, recover from setbacks, and maintain positive mental health despite adverse conditions. However, the factors that contribute to resilience—such as social support, positive role models, and access to community resources—may be limited in low-income settings. Understanding the coping mechanisms employed by adolescents in these communities is crucial for designing interventions that enhance resilience and promote mental well-being. This study will investigate the coping strategies and resilience levels among adolescents in low-income areas of Oyo State, with the aim of identifying protective factors and barriers to effective stress management.
Statement of the Problem
In low-income communities in Oyo State, adolescents face a range of socioeconomic challenges that can severely impact their mental health. Limited resources, exposure to violence, and unstable home environments contribute to high levels of stress and emotional turmoil. Although some adolescents develop resilience and effective coping strategies, many do not have access to the support systems necessary for healthy adaptation, resulting in increased vulnerability to depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems (Chukwu, 2023). The lack of structured programs to build resilience and promote positive coping further exacerbates these issues. Without targeted interventions that foster resilience, the long-term mental health of adolescents in these communities is at risk, perpetuating cycles of disadvantage and poor outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate the current coping strategies among adolescents, assess their resilience, and identify factors that hinder or promote effective stress management.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the resilience levels among adolescents in low-income communities in Oyo State.
2. To identify the coping strategies employed by these adolescents in response to stress.
3. To recommend interventions that enhance resilience and promote positive mental health.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of resilience among adolescents in low-income communities in Oyo State?
2. Which coping strategies are most commonly used by these adolescents?
3. What interventions can improve resilience and mental health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher resilience is significantly associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety.
2. Effective coping strategies are positively correlated with better mental health outcomes.
3. Community-based resilience programs will significantly enhance adolescent mental health.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on adolescents (aged 13-19) in low-income communities in Oyo State. Data will be collected through resilience and coping strategy questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations include self-report bias and variability in socioeconomic conditions.
